The Six Degrees of Favorite Foods

All of us may all be different—with differing opinions, backgrounds, cultures, religions—but what unites us all is our love of a good meal (even if we disagree on what that meal might include). We’ve all heard of the “six degrees of separation,” which is the idea that any two people in the world can be connected with a maximum of six steps. We used this concept to connect some of our favorite celebrities, athletes, musicians, and public figures through their foods of choice. The connections we discovered will surprise you. Take a look below to see the tangled web our favorite foods weave.

Despite their undoubtedly strict day-to-day diets, LeBron James, Justin Timberlake, Jay-Z, and Jessica Simpson could all be members of a literal breakfast club due to their love of cereal. Three members of this breakfast club—Jessica Simpson, Jay-Z, and Justin Timberlake—also share an appreciation for pasta, which just so happens to also be a favorite of pop legend Lady Gaga. Lady Gaga, a native New Yorker, loves a good slice of pizza—as does fellow artist Beyoncé (we can’t help but wonder if they shared a slice during their “Telephone” video).

On the political side of our food chart, politicians who may never align when it comes to legislation seem to overlap on what kinds of foods they like. Former president George W. Bush and Franklin D. Roosevelt likely wouldn’t have agreed politically, but they both favor(ed) a grilled cheese sandwich. George W. Bush also shares an appetite for enchiladas with former President Bill Clinton and with Senator Ted Cruz. Democrat Bill Clinton also likes to eat ice cream, which just so happens to be the preferred dessert of three Republicans: Senator John McCain, George H.W. Bush, and First Lady Melania Trump.

Although many of the foods on our chart aren’t what we would call nutritious, there are some celebs and public figures who preferred healthier foods such as Katy Perry and the Dalai Lama, who both said mushrooms were among one of their favorite things to eat. The Dalai Lama also said he loves to eat broccoli, which is one of former President Barack Obama’s snack preferences. Don’t worry though—the Dalai Lama also has a sweet tooth and lists chocolate as one of his preferred foods. He’s in great company, too: Queen Elizabeth, Nancy Pelosi, Hillary Clinton, Britney Spears, Selena Gomez, Cher, and Kerri Walsh Jennings also say that they can’t get enough chocolate.

Interestingly, there were a few people who didn’t have food connections who you think would share more than a few meals together. Married music power couple Jay-Z and Beyoncé didn’t have any food matchups on our chart, and neither did Jay-Z and longtime friend, rapper Kanye West. Surprisingly, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, and Jeb Bush didn’t have any favorite foods in common, which must make holidays at the Bush household quite complicated when it comes to dishes.

Some of our food groups also didn’t provide a connection to the rest of our diagram such as bacon—an exclusive favorite of Hillary Duff and Vice President Mike Pence—or chicken wings, who are beloved by MMA fighter Ronda Rousey, actress Scarlett Johnansson, and the late rapper Tupac. Steak didn’t give us connections with the rest of the diagram either, but is popular with former actor/California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, the late rapper Biggie Smalls, NBA legend Michael Jordan, and actor George Clooney (a dinner party we wouldn’t be disappointed to see). And pork chops only proved to be a meal favorite for Senator Bernie Sanders and NBA MVP Steph Curry, who we would love to see go out to dinner together (or maybe Steph can invite Bernie over for a home cooked meal by his chef wife, Ayesha).
